How our lampshades attach
Our lampshades attach in one of two ways. XS, S and box pleated shades have a bulb clip that sits directly on the light bulb. M and L have a duplex fitting and are mounted on the lamp base with an adjustable shade carrier. If you are unsure what suits your lamp, send a photo to hello@bellevueatelier.com and we will help.
E14 or E27 – which fitting does your lamp have?
E14 and E27 are the two most common bulb fittings. The number is the diameter of the screw thread in millimetres.
To check, unscrew the bulb and look at it. The fitting type is usually printed on the bulb or its packaging.
The bulb clip works with both fittings. The duplex fitting needs a threaded E27 lamp holder, so if your lamp has an E14 fitting, choose XS, S or box pleated.
E27
E27 is the standard, larger fitting, about 2.7 cm wide. Most table and floor lamps have it.
E14
E14 is the smaller fitting, about 1.4 cm wide. It is common in smaller lamps.
Bulb clip fitting (XS, S and box pleated)
The lampshade has a classic bulb clip that clips directly onto the light bulb. It suits small round bulbs with an E14 or E27 fitting.
Which bulb should I use?
Use a small round LED bulb. The round shape lets the clip grip securely and keeps the lampshade sitting straight. Longer or candle-shaped bulbs give a poorer grip.
Why LED?
LED bulbs give off far less heat than traditional bulbs. That is gentler on the fabric and lining, so the lampshade keeps its shape and colour for longer. We recommend LED for all our lampshades.
Duplex fitting (M and L)
M and L are mounted with an adjustable shade carrier in polished chrome, sold separately. The carrier fits lamp bases with a threaded E27 lamp holder.
How to fit the shade carrier
- Switch off the lamp, unplug it and let the bulb cool.
- Unscrew the bulb, then unscrew the ring on the lamp holder's thread.
- Slide the bottom ring of the shade carrier over the lamp holder.
- Screw the ring back on so the carrier is held firmly in place.
- Screw the bulb back in and place the lampshade on the carrier.
- Use the screws on the carrier to adjust the height until the lampshade sits right in relation to the lamp base.
A good rule of thumb is that the lampshade should hide the lamp holder without covering too much of the base. Our size guide shows our M and L lampshades on different lamp bases.
Using a lampshade as a ceiling shade
Our M and L lampshades can also be used as ceiling shades with an adapter ring. The adapter ring attaches to the duplex fitting, so the lampshade can hang from a ceiling pendant with a bulb.
